About the event
This workshop is for 10-12 poet-artists working in, or interested in working in, the field of ecopoetics to come together and collaborate on projects that engage directly or indirectly with the workshop theme: grasses & pastures. It is a derivative of the longer-running eco-laboratory of multi-disciplinary practice Nature, Art, and Habitat Residency, which has explored themes of woods, rock & stone, and water.
Participants will stay in the town of Sottochiesa in the Taleggio Valley and involve themselves by contributing to group discussion, going on excursions in the local mountains, forests, and towns, devising and creating work, writing, and thinking. A recommended reading list will be available in advance of the workshop, and there will be publication and further networking opportunities following the workshop.
2019 is the first year this workshop will run, and it focuses on the theme of 'grasses and pastures' that is the focus of the larger NAHR residency for this year. Simon Eales, who will co-host this workshop with Brent Cox and Courtlin Byrd, was a NAHR fellow in 2017, at which the theme was 'rock and stone.' Simon produced a book of poetry called "Deathroll and Netbag" and an experiential map-based artpiece, which you can still engage with in the valley. Read about his experience at NAHR here.
The intention for your participation at this workshop is for you to have the time, space, and group support to think about your art practice and its ecopoetical themes, and to create work that develops these areas of your practice. The valley has long been a place where humans interact with the non-human for the creation of mutual sustenance. We hope to continue in this tradition, at the same time as going some way to addressing the urgency the global environmental situation.
The cost of the workshop is 600 euros. This covers two weeks of accommodation at Soggiorno Mazzoleni in Sottochiesa, car hire for transfers and excursions, administration, and facilitation. You will be asked to transfer this amount to the workshop's associated PayPal account in full before your arrive. Food and other travel is to be paid by participants.
Please apply to the workshop by clicking on the button "Apply Now". You will be directed to a short web form that asks you to share your information, a bit about your artistic and academic background, and your intentions for the workshop. We may be in touch with you to discuss your application.
We will continue to receive applications until the workshop is full.
